From legends and stories of the Highlands and the Islands, from Erin and many other Celtic countries there persists the story of the Seal-folk. In Scotland they are called Selkies (Selchies),and in Ireland they are called Roanes, but whatever their name the story is always the same.
From the sea, Selkies come ashore, some say only midsummer's eve. There the take off their sealskins and become beautiful men and women. The men roam the land but the women stay on the shore. Should a mortal man see them, he instantly falls in love. All he needs to do is steal the sealskin and then he takes her to wife. She becomes a perfect wife and mother. When she finds her sealskin, which she always does, she returns to the sea and her true family which is as it should be.
This sculpture represents a moment of hesitation. She is about to return to sea, wearing the trappings of civilization and sealskin in hand.
A moment between two worlds.
